Below is a short one-page personal statement that I wrote in order to have practice writing them for when I apply for residency in anesthesiology.
Anesthesiology first stood out to me when I did a project on different careers that I was interested in pursuing. I was first interested in anesthesia when I saw a video of Taylor Swift crying over a banana after her LASIK surgery. I wondered why the anesthesia had caused her to have such a strong emotional reaction over a small matter. Since then, I have done multiple projects on anesthesiology, and learned about the different stages, types, administration methods, and drugs used for anesthesia. In addition, I have also researched what happens when children are under anesthesia, how anesthesiologists handle being under pressure, how they prepare a patient before their operation, how they make sure that the patients feel safe and comfortable, and the pros and cons of being an anesthesiologist. I like the idea of being a calm and focused person under high-pressure situations, and I think that having anesthesiology as a profession would fit the person that I am.
When I get to residency, I hope to be in a program that teaches me not just science and math, but also how to work well with others and care for patients with compassion. I also hope that it will shape me into a confident and independent practitioner through hands-on experience and strong mentorship. A program that values and emphasizes teamwork, communication, and patient well-being would allow me to become someone who would be able to deliver optimal patient care and work properly in an anesthesia care team. I wish to have mentors that challenge and support me, and I want to be part of a team that works together in order to do what is best for the patients.
My goal as a future anesthesiologist is to help patients and their families feel safe, comfortable, and pain-free during a scary point in their lives. I also hope to possibly teach others someday and mentor other future doctors in anesthesiology. Being an anesthesiologist is more than just medicine–it is also about teamwork, trust, focus, empathy, and sympathy.
